FORT LAUDERDALE-HOLLYWOOD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, Fla. (WSVN) -- Federal officers detained five workers, suspected of being illegally in the country, after they were allowed access to a restricted area at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

An employee who works at the airport, who didn't want to be identified, said that on Oct. 12, he saw U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers take five workers into custody at a construction entrance on the airport's perimeter. "At first I saw them take two individuals, cuff them, take them away," the employee said. "Then there was three other individuals who had to be escorted out from the secure area, they were already inside."

7News learned that the men should not have been inside the secure area. "It appeared to be an obvious security breach," said the employee.

Concerns of airport employees carrying out terrorist attacks began after ISIS claimed to have planted a bomb on a Russian passenger jet. The plane crashed in Egypt, killing all 224 people on board. Reports said an airport employee may have planted that bomb.

Here in South Florida, a witness said what he saw raised red flags. "They had Mexican passports, that's all," he said. "I overheard one of the security persons at the gate talking to the Customs agents and that's what they said, these guys had been working for several weeks for this contractor at the airport."

BSO doesn't issue the security badges for airport workers and have no control over construction sites at the airport. This responsibility belong solely to the Broward County Aviation Department. There are numerous workers, cleaners, etc who have badges and are allowed in secure areas. It only a matter of time before an attack happens. BCAD must come up with a better screening process.

Hey douche...a few things to straighten out.

    1. It happened over a month ago.
    2. I was there and we (BSO) did the right thing and called CBP and BCAD who verified they had false passports
    3. BSO does not run the security areas as much as you think. BCAD runs the show. Its their game we are just visiting.
    4. No news here or anything to bad to say about BSO. We did our job...point blank end of story. Now go stick your head back in the sand!!

Ask Donadio about an FLL security breach. He allowed his wife to piggy back his card to avoid TSA for a personal flight.

Thank goodness they are looking at checking employees all time if they aren't already. There were airline contractors who hired people and needed them to work ASAP and allowed them to work in secure areas with their BCAD ID and paperwork in for their customs seal. When there were checks at the doors going from the baggage area and the terminal building they scattered like roaches when the lights are turned on.

No one is going anywhere there are 4 openings in the airport and 5 more people retiring in the next 6 months if not more we need all the help we can get as not to end up understaffed.
