Less than a year ago, Dr. John Super, a licensed psychologist hired by the Sarasota Sheriff Tom Knight, determined that Capt. Mike Pelfrey was unfit for duty as a captain. For five months, Pelfrey was then reassigned as a non-supervisory sheriff's deputy in the civil section while he underwent counseling and monthly mental health evaluations. He was eventually reevaluated and reinstated as captain to a newly created position reporting directly to Col. Kurt Hoffman.

Hoffman wrote that Pelfrey was exhibiting mood swings, disobeying orders and experiencing self-described anger issues and that Pelfrey made remarks to students related to killing them. Pelfrey said his actions and words were misconstrued and taken out of context and that he has never been unfit to serve.

An IA investigation was launched after a heated meeting between Pelfrey and academy coordinator Keith Muncy. The two argued in Pelfrey's office and continued the confrontation in the lobby. Pelfrey attempted to enter several unfavorable comments into Muncy's records and Hoffman described Pelfrey's entries as incomplete and concerning. Hoffman, Maj. Jon Goetluck and Pelfrey then met to discuss the records and the argument between Pelfrey and Muncy. Hoffman wrote that "(Capt. Pelfrey) was very emotional during our meeting and appeared visibly upset. (Pelfrey) went from anger to crying and at several points in the conversation was so overcome with emotion that he could not speak.”

Hoffman wrote that Pelfrey said he “internalized” workplace issues and had “anger issues.” But Pelfrey denied Hoffman's allegations saying that, “I attempted to explain myself [during the meeting], but that was to no avail.” Hoffman then wrote that, "...(Pelfrey) creates more conflict than reasonably exists for circumstances. The incident with Keith Muncy is the second incident where (Pelfrey) has exhibited unreasonable reactions to common workplace issues.”

The article said that Pelfrey passed the polygraph. It's ironic that Hoffman, who wrote all those bad things about Pelfrey, flunked his own previous polygraph when he stole porn and stole a boat and stole gas as a reserve deputy. Where is the credability? How do you spell bassackwards?
