Because it was cheaper and faster to pay to hide Kermit's illegal actions. It is laughable that Kermit followed the direction of the Board, since he illegally trespassed the retired FF before the Board even knew about it. And it was supposedly on the advise of Board Counsel? That's laughable too, because two years previously another Chairman tried to do the same thing and Board Counsel told the whole board they would be having illegal meetings (outside of the Sunshine Law, which has not been changed since) if they trespassed the same FF for the same flimflam excuses. In fact, when you read the transcripts of the Executive Sessions, you will find that none of the trustees even heard a peep out of the FF that supposedly made some comment and interrupted the meeting. This was a film-flam from the start and the Board got stuck trying to bury Kermit's mistakes. And it was the Board's own audio recordings that proved the FF's innocence in this case and note that the Board has now decided that they will no longer record their meetings, because they don't want anyone else in the future to use their own words against them, even though it's supposed to be a public meeting held in the Sunshine!

You would think after all these years on the pension board and all of the extravagant mini-vacations on the City's payroll and the Pension Board's dime, Kermit and the others would have learned a thing or too. WE have paid him THOUSANDS of DOLLARS in salary and THOUSANDS of DOLLARS in travel to supposed "learn" how to govern our fund. Why is it that he and the rest of the board ignore all they are supposedly learning at these extravagant conferences?
Oh well, I guess I should run for the board so I can get some free trips. Ribbit, ribbit!

All those junkets are on Professional Leave, meaning they get their regular salary while gone. When a Sergeant is making close to $100k a year, that's a lot of money for 4-5 mini vacations a year. Especially when he obviously isn't attending the training, otherwise he wouldn't be making the same stupid mistakes over and over.
