    Kurt Hoffman fails polygraph about stealing from two (2) former employers

    Results of lie-detector tests shed differing opinions of Kurt Hoffman

    According to a report obtained by the examiner, Kurt Hoffman answered deceptively on a 1989 polygraph exam concerning stealing from two different employers, shoplifting and drinking habits.

    Hoffman was given his first polygraph exam by W.E. “Mac” McGinnis. During the first polygraph, Hoffman said that:

    * He has never stolen anything.
    * He has never participated in any undetected crimes.
    * He only consumes beer at home and only once a week.

    The polygraph examiner concluded in his written report, “The applicant [Kurt Hoffman] was deceptive.”

    Hoffman then took a second test a week later, administered by polygraph examiner Edward DuBois. However, before the second test began, Hoffman confessed to DuBois that, “I do have admissions to make,” DuBois wrote in his report. According to DuBois, Hoffman admitted that:

    * While working as a Reserve deputy, Hoffman took gas (twice) from the Charlotte County
    Sheriff’s Office for use in his personally owned car without paying for it.
    * Hoffman admitted taking herbicide without paying for it from another employer (the
    Charlotte County mosquito control department).
    * Stealing a boat as a teenager.
    * Shoplifting pornography.

    After the confessions, he took the second polygraph test and passed it. A former sheriff’s detective, Ken Dudding, said the first failed polygraph raises questions about Hoffman’s propensity to be dishonest. Dudding explained that Hoffman’s confessions in the second polygraph support that Hoffman was deception in the first polygraph. “Hoffman lied and he got caught. A leopard doesn’t change its spots. Hoffman is a liar,” Dudding said.

    Earn Varn explained that a polygraph measures changes to heart rate and other responses, which indicates whether a subject is experiencing an emotional response to questions.

    Despite the above, former sheriff Bill Balkwill hired Kurt Hoffman and now the Sarasota Sheriff’s Office is stuck with him – at least for now. Then Tom Knight made Hoffman his #2 right hand man.

    How many LEO applicants are you aware of that can fail a polygraph concerning that kind of stealing (while on-duty too)... and then make confessions a week later to multiple thefts from multiple employers... and then get hired as a LEO?

    Integrity must start from the top. Both Knight and Hoffman are now at the top, which is where they should not be.

    So Hoffman flunked the first poly because he lied about being a thief, but then during the second poly, he broke down and finally admitted to stealing as a reserve deputy and stealing grand theft boat ---- and then he passed the poly for admitting to all that stuff? OMG now that's a true second floor troll who fits in perfectly into Knight's highly selective inner circle. Even John Walsh cant top that!!!

    Stealing for a non-sworn civilian is one thing and may be tolerated (under some circumstances), but stealing AFTER you’ve been sworn-in as a LEO is a completely different issue and it is completely unacceptable.

    Do you think Tom Knight and Kurt Hoffman say anything if we refueled are privately owned vehicles once or twice at sso fleet without paying for it!

    You should ask Blair Waller. He encouraged a subordinate to use his SSO gas card to fill the gas tank of the subordinates vehicle. I will tell you now like I told you before, you lied about your USMC service and about the gas card. You have no integrity.

    The pot calling the kettle black

    So let me get this straight. Colonel Hoffman, the 2nd in charge of the agency and hand picked by the elected troll, committed at least 5 thefts in his past including at least one felony? At first he was untruthful in an official proceeding and then he confessed to his criminal past, yet he is the one who was behind JT getting terminated for being untruthful in an official proceeding!!! Wow isn't that the pot calling the kettle black? No wonder why this place is like Alice in Wonderland where up is down and right is wrong! Thank goodness I only have a few years left.

    Do you REALLY BELIEVE it's ok with Knight and Hoffman to steal SSO gas?

    When Hoffman took CCSO gas, did he REALLY BELIEVE it was ok for him to take it?

    Actions speak louder than words.

    Understood.

    A while back, we were required to take an ethics class which discussed that kind of an issue. The instructor described it as a an internal "culture of corruption" by agency heads, but the agency heads are blind to it (sort of like how a sociopath is in denial). The instructor said that a corrupt upper level management will influence the level of police misconduct that is tolerated.

    It going to be difficult to change the entrenched 2nd floor culture, but it can be done. Look at the histories of Tom Knight, Kurt Hoffman, John Walsh and others. It's a process that can take years to change and it’s not something that happens overnight or in a couple of months -- unless sweeping change comes with a newly elected Sarasota sheriff who has integrity.

    Can it happen?

    Yes, I really believe that it's ok for me to take SSO gas, so I'm going to go and do it. My actions will speak louder than my words.

    If an SSO applicant lies during his poly ---- and then if he comes back a week later and admits that he lied (during a second poly) -- then is he eligible to get hired here? Apparently so!

    Truth is stranger than fiction.
