Two North Port Police officers were among those Congressman Vern Buchanan awarded Florida 16th District Congressional Law Enforcement Awards on Friday, public information officer Josh Taylor has announced.

Patrolman Dustin Cohen received the Preservation of Life Award for helping to save a man's life while off duty at a local gym. Sgt. Scott King received the Dedication and Professionalism Award for his commitment to the department and community, Taylor wrote in a media release.
Cohen used an Automatic External Defibrillator to help resuscitate a man who was suffering from cardiac arrest, Taylor wrote.
“Sgt. King was instrumental in coordinating the 2014 Sarasota County Law Enforcement memorial ceremony, 9/11 remembrance, and an unprecedented funeral service for a fellow employee and colleague who lost a battle with cancer,” Taylor wrote.
Congrats guys!

Getting a commendation from Vern Buchanan just for actually doing what you are paid and trained to do is comparable to getting a James Beard award from Jeffrey Dahmer for making macaroni and cheese. You really had to be desperately scraping the bottom to ask Buchanan for the photo op. Apparently Bernie Madoff wasn't available.

Just an aside on the writing, how is a funeral service unprecedented?

Hell Josh had to have some kind of positive piece to release to the public since he got hired. Everything else he has to release has been AI investigations and other department problems.
You have no idea the time an effort King put in to making sure that the bagpipes were placed in the right spot for 9/11.

It comes as no surprise that the Venice trolls would have to come on this site to try and make a good thing look bad. As for these 2 officers, I am proud to call them brothers and say job done well to both!

Meh. You totally missed the point, it went sailing over your head while you were naval gazing. These guys did their job and well done to them for doing their jobs. You know, the stuff that taxpayers pay them to do.
As for the commendation from Buchanan, this is an old trick. Venice used to do this frequently. Whenever the city was caught in wrongdoing, out trots the mayor to accept some award or other, often paid for by the city. There's a whole bunch of companies that do nothing but hand out awards, you just have to apply for it and pay the application fees -- anywhere from $500 to $3,000.
We bought a lot of awards when Calamaras and Hammett were mayor. You guys just found a cheaper way of doing it, as Buchanan wants to be in the news as much as possible to boost his upcoming run for the U.S. Senate.
Again, good on the two cops here for doing a good job. Shame on the department to politicize it as a diversion from the ongoing storm.

Actually these awards are nationally sponsored by Congress. Thus is not unique to north port or any other jurisdiction. It is not a ploy by the congressman to boost himself, these have been issued annually. As far as making this political, get real, you are the one making it political. It is actually nice to see officers being put in a positive light since there np officers do an outstanding job, regardless of smear tactics and sensationalized reporting.
