It's spring break, St. Pete police say. Police saw an uptick in crime last Friday through Sunday, with 18 auto thefts and 44 auto burglaries reported — more than double the numbers on a typical weekend.“During spring break we expect this,” said police spokeswoman Yolanda Fernandez.

Admin chose to implement the chief's new Juvenile 2nd Chance program to coincide with spring break. WE EXPECTED THIS.

    Follow the leader . . .

Spring break began at Pinellas public schools this week, and police say they've already registered a sharp spike in car thefts and burglaries across the city.
It's an old problem...Car thefts and burglaries have risen for more than a year...They believe some thieves came into St. Petersburg from surrounding communities.

St. Pete is the destination city for Clearwater jits. Come one, come all!
To be continued year 'round with Chunky Sunday because SPPD admin is rolling out the welcome mat once again (see chief's Staff Notes.) Fun seekers from the chief's old stomping grounds in Clearwater are no longer welcome there. SPPD solution, import them to da 'Burg.

If you had a valid gripe, the SWAT commanders of Pinellas Park PD and St. Pete PD (or the highest ranking member of your team at the Manatee shooting range) should've lodged a complaint via the appropriate MSO chain-of-command. Posting your rant on a public message board is an indicator of your unprofessionalism and it makes you look weak. Maybe you deserved to be dissed.

What a timely reminder, Telisha. Your report of campaign contributions is due April 10 at the city clerk's office. It's a veritable Who's Who
    of "STFU or quit" locksteppers.

“There’s about 100 kids in our city doing these crimes.”

Holloway told the city he would route 500 juveniles to Parks&Rec for "diversion." And oh what a diversion it is.

It gave the city an excuse to hire a slew of social workers and Ban the Boxers to administer the chief's program. Meanwhile, the Parks employees are leaning against rakes all day long waiting for the influx. Which hasn't materialized. Seems the 500 number was inflated to pad the payroll and soak taxpayers. Even with the publicized Spring Break crime spike, guess how many have been diverted? Zero.

The real problem will be finding the first and second time offenders. Good concept for a kid caught shoplifting for the first time, bur those aren't the problem in the city. Lock your cars it's spring break (as if the crime rate is that much different then the rest of the year)

Tribune: Replace Predatory “Proactive” Policing with Predictive Policing

St Petersburg’s go to policing strategy “proactive policing” is to find and arrest as many people possible in low-socioeconomic areas whom they believe are more likely to commit future crimes. This is done by patrol officers using their gut (implicit bias) and using minor or imaginary traffic infractions as a pretense to see if there is any reason to arrest people, poor, mostly of color. This of course has the side effects of appearing overtly racist, causes mistrust and financially cripples neighborhoods. It also ignores who is responsible for most of the property crimes: children who don’t drive.
Predictive Policing in contrast is about disrupting or stopping crimes before they happen. This is accomplished by using simple software algorithms that look at crime patterns (types, locations and times) and station patrol cars where and when crime is more likely to happen. This method of attacking crime instead of people, stops crimes from happening, catches criminals in the act and dramatically reduces response time. It also doesn’t hurt thousands of harmless people for every menace to society that gets caught in the big predatory proactive net.
To solve neighborhood crimes after the fact you need to build trust. Chief Holloway’s very welcome Stop, Walk and Talk once a week will work much better earning that long lost trust when the other six days a week predatory proactive policing isn’t earning distrust, hate and contempt. Time to get smart on crime instead of stupid and mean to defenseless poor people.

Hey Kurt do you know another name for predictive policing? Profiling. No not racial profiling, but profiling behaviors and actions to guess what? Predict criminal behavior and take action before the crime or intervene during the crime. I bet you'll never use the term profiling unless its in a negative light. By the way profiling is legal.

Here's another thought. Regardless of the reason for any contact with the police whether its a consensual citizen contact or a stop for one of your minor or imaginary traffic offenses when someone is arrested its because they committed a crime. Perhaps if you focus some of your energy on convincing the criminals who commit the most crimes (which also happen to be isolated to the low income areas) to take responsibility for their lives and not commit crimes they wouldn't get arrested.

Face the fact: you are part of the problem. By making excuses for criminal behavior you're only sending the message that its ok to commit those minor crimes which you guessed it lead to bigger crimes.
