Any help would be greatly appreciated. I submitted an app in December and it say that it was sent to hiring. Do I wait to hear from a recruiter or should I contact the department.

Yes because hiring process's usually take only one month. Somebody sounds like a lazy butt hurt pos.

Contact the recruiter. There are 30 some odd applicants working through the process at the moment and the recruiter works part time. Good Luck.

You might be in luck if you are applying. At least 5 people that have been at SPD under 5 years have decided to leave...some to the SSO, others federal and many more besides actively looking to get out of Dodge on the fastest horse possible.
SPD is in a sad state and this chief along with the city leaders are not making the situation any better. If you want to have the backing of the top LEO in your agency, room for advancement in an equal environment (without preference to gender or race), a pension, a place where real police work is done (not kissing up to the media and non-law abiding citizenry), please look somewhere else. SPD used to be an elite LE agency, that ship has sailed into the past.

Its true, we now have one of the worst environments in Law enforcement. Being hired by SPD is no longer something to be proud of. It isn't an achievement. The smart people see that the ship is sunk, and are going elsewhere. If this continues, I see no way that the agency will ever bounce back. IN 3 years, the chief has picked awful supervisors, the patrol captains one of the worst people you will ever meet. HE and the chief are mean and nasty, and think that makes them good at their job. People are getting in trouble at record rates, when they've done nothing wrong. The smart newbs are leaving to find employment elsewhere. Why come to a place where you must choose your loyalty. Either side with the real cops and get no place, or kiss the chiefs ass and maybe get someplace. She is atrocious, vindictive, spiteful, and grotesque. HAve fun
