Let's say for a moment that you're caught in a cross fire through no fault of your own. A late arrival may not realize he's got you in a cross fire for example. So you draw down on the threat when the shooting begins. You see debris flying off your target and all of the sudden you begin to take fire from what appears to be your threat. Very easily and understandingly you return fire from what appears to be your threat firing at you. Good shooting. No one can fault you for that. It's easy to Monday-morning quarterback an incident that required a split second decision. Could the situation have been handled better. Maybe. Every situation is different and very fluid. You do what you have to in order to survive. Ultimately, the responsibility lies with the scumbag that elevated the police response. Don't ever second guess yourself. It may turn out to be the split second response you'll need for survival.

This is the problem. Even now you’ve got people on here defending reckless shootings by others, instead of calling it what is, Reckless and Poor judgment. This is why Miami PD is so notorious for bad shootings i.e. unarmed civilians and officers because this reckless cowboy gun play is supported, encouraged and celebrated by the macho Latinos with guns and badges. How much trouble has our city had by these imbeciles shooting unarmed people, in the back, shooting them off motor cycles, shooting unarmed people in game rooms; the list goes on. First of all, 20 sector?? You must have been a cop in the 60's. That means that you were nothing more than a goon with a badge. Second, what about the officers shot?? Wow, about six months ago I Read here on Leo affairs where an attorney was appealing to the city commission, I believe it was titled: open letter to the city of Miami Government. He was pleading with the city to train / re-train their officers immediately for the sake of public safety. Their officers were shooting and killing unarmed citizens irrespective of the shooting policy. Their fellow officers would celebrate and defend them even for bad shootings. The “us against them” mentality in law enforcement is a common enemy. That’s why policies and training must be implemented, stressed and enforced.

New Officers especially, should know that you can’t just execute the bad guy because he did something heinous. Your job is to apprehend for the “due process” of the justice system.

Further, officers should be trained that you can’t always return fire if shot at. You must use good judgment and restraint when using deadly force. For example: 1) officers can’t shoot unarmed citizens and think that all they need to say is that “I thought they had a gun”, and think that that will justify the shooting.

2) You can’t always shoot back at the bad guy. For example: If the bad guy is running through a schoolyard full of children and shooting at you, you can't shoot back.

When the citizens cried out, nothing was done. NOW, LEO’s acting lawfully in the performance of their duties were shot, and could have been killed, by other LEO’s that were obviously poorly trained, lacking in judgment, and discipline.

Having been a Miami officer for many years, I am witness to a dark culture among Many Miami officers. These officers seek a twisted glory that they receive from other Miami officers, for the taking of a life, no matter the circumstance. Good shooting, bad shooting makes no difference. This culture makes certain officers itchy on the finger to shoot. Notice how vehemently officers are defended, by Union and other officers, even when the shooting is not lawful as per Federal law, State law, or Departmental policy.

City of Miami Government, How long will you fail the citizens of your City and the County? How long will you put poorly trained cowboys, with loaded guns on the streets to terrorize your citizens and other law enforcement agencies that have to work with them?
