It is better to obey the constitution, even if it forces us to let some suspects go. Why obey the Constitution if it forces us to let suspects go free without sandbagging them or shaking them down? Because the Constitution protects the innocent from getting falsely accused or framed with faulty evidence. There is a cost involved. That’s the cost or tradeoff of living in a free Constitutional Republic.

Law enforcement is most efficient and effective in a totalitarian dictatorship, but the rights of good people suffer under totalitarianism, all in the name of efficiency. A totalitarian sheriff is also the most effective, but the cost is that good employees are treated unfairly, all in the name of efficiency, especially when a totalitarian sheriff feels threatened or offended. From management’s point of view, totalitarianism should be embraced because of its efficiency. That’s why Tom told promotional candidates that admires Hitler’s leadership style. :roll:

Dan is not the problem, he is just a symptom of the problem. Look at who has been in charge of hiring since Tom came in to office. Tom and Steve Burns have done a lot of the hiring, and look at the nutty people or the nutty cases that have happened in that time. Once people like Tom, Steve Burns and Kurt Hoffman are gone, then we should be able to get this agency back on track. But until that time, it will remain screwball. And you know it's true.
