Place to Live

Just curious as to where do most officers live? All joking aside, im not asking for address or anything, but while your pay is alot higher than the average FL starting rate of 38K, it seems to me that it would be hard to live in Key West on that.

Do alot of people commute from one of the northern keys? Do apartment complexes or rental properties offer polcie officers a "courtesy officer" rate?

This is one of the top reasons cops come and go from Key West. There are really no complexes that are willing to filet cops on rent (at least not like on the mainland) because the complexes have no problem renting them out at full ridiculous rate to someone else. They dont need on site police because the city is so small they can just call the cops and the response time is nothing.

Most young cops (which most of the department is) tend to roomate together some in Key West and some up the Keys where its cheaper to rent.

Cops who come from other departments tend to fend much better. They usually can afford the cheapest house, usually not in the city of Key West, and swing the payment on salary and details (which there is more than enough to work).

However, if your a young cop starting out in Key West, you can forget finding a woman, buying a house and raising a family (at least a sane one) and living in comfort. It just aint happening. You will have a lot of money in your pocket, and be able to afford nice toys and vacations, however a home will not be in the equation.

what are the names of they areas they livein outside of key west? Are you permitted to take your take home car out of the city?

Just look at a map and anywhere between Key West and Big Pine is where you want to be. They have take home cars and Big Pine is the furthest you can live, about a 30-45 minute drive.
