The Lee County deputy charged Sunday with robbery changed his story several times during an interview with investigators about the incident, according to the sheriff’s office.
Michael J. Ronga, 41, has been suspended without pay after he was accused of beating and robbing a 20-year-old man in Bonita Springs. He is facing a charge of felony robbery without a weapon. He was released from the Lee County Jail on Monday after posting bail of $15,000.
Ronga initially admitted to picking up Rodolfo Lopez Castaneda at Maria’s Restaurant to give him a ride home, but said there were no confrontations between the two, according to a sheriff’s office records released by the Lee County Clerk of Court.
Ronga said Castaneda had been drinking, and Ronga thought he indicated he lived near Sandy Hollow Drive.
He said he dropped Castaneda off near an apartment complex in the area, but as the interview progressed, he said he took him to the area of Isla Bella Circle and Sommerset Falls.
Investigators said Ronga “changed his account slightly each time the interview progressed.”
He later admitted to shoving Castaneda, because he was “hanging out near his vehicle,” but when confronted with an injury suffered by the alleged victim, Ronga said he shoved him more than once, and his hand may have struck Castaneda’s face, according to the report.
Ronga initially denied taking anything from Castaneda, but he later admitted to taking his cell phone and putting it in his vehicle. He said he thought he gave it back, and he denied taking any other property from Castaneda.
The incident started after deputies were called to Maria’s Restaurant about a disturbance involving two men who were upset over being kicked out for underage drinking.
Castaneda was in the parking lot of the restaurant when deputies arrived. He later told investigators he thought Ronga was going to give him a ride home, but the deputy instead drove him to an area of Isla Bella Circle.
Castaneda told investigators Ronga let him out of the vehicle and started reaching into his pockets.
He said he turned to face Ronga, and the deputy punched him several times and took his cell phone and $170.
Castaneda said he was able to run home, and he then contacted law enforcement about the incident.
The sheriff’s office said Monday there was evidence found at the scene that corroborated Castaneda’s story.
Ronga’s next court date is scheduled for June 3.
