A Toronto man wanted for a violent robbery shot himself in the head as he wrestled with police officers at a Burger King parking lot last Sunday, the Toronto Sun has learned.

Details of the bizarre shooting of Zoltan Hyacinth were revealed during a bail hearing Friday for Hyacinth’s live-in girlfriend, Angelica Chaplain.

Crown attorney Barbara Bennett said Hyacinth and Chaplain were under surveillance Sunday night at their home on Vinci Cres. because police believed the pair were involved in a violent Pizza Pizza robbery on March 14.

Officers followed their vehicle to the parking lot of the Burger King at Keele and Wilson Aves. where the suspects’ car was boxed in and officers approached the vehicle.

“Zoltan Hyacinth struggled with the officers for a long period of time during which the gun he was in possession of went off and the projectile struck him in the head,” Bennett said.

Hyacinth later died from his injuries.
