Manatee County officials propose $458 million budget
MANATEE -- Sheriff Brad Steube today requested $5.5 million for pay increases for his employees, which county commissioners said might be the subject of a voter referendum.
The sheriff made an impassioned plea to the commission, arguing that starting salaries for his employees have fallen behind those of other areas.
Steube said he is losing valuable officers who are taking jobs elsewhere because the salaries are higher.
Since last year, 40 deputies have resigned, and 25 have retired, Steube told commissioners.
Entry-level pay for his officers, at $39,689 annually, ranks 15th among a list of area agencies' pay rates, he said.
Commissioners expressed sympathy at his request, but nixed a tax increase in another tight budget year that would have to finance the raises -- unless voters OK'd it in a referendum that might occur as soon as this summer's primary election.
Steube made the request the same day County Administrator Ed Hunzeker unveiled a proposed $458 million county budget for 2012-13.

Re: raises
Sheriff Brad Steube stands up for his employees because he knows people are the most important asset of the agency. He is a real sheriff not some lawyer appointed sheriff by a crooked governor. Gualtieri wastes money on krap like Safe Harbor and other garbage we don't need. Cann't wait to vote in a real sheriff.

As for Safe Harbor, the additional 1.6 million the SHeriff is asking for wouldn't give you but a few penny raise, not even a percentage point. A 3% increase for all agency members costs around 5.5 million which I'm sure is what Stuebe is asking for. There is no money for raises. Get used to it and plan on sucking it up at least through 2016 (BOCC budget forecast). What other "garbage" does the Sheriff waste money on? If you're going to lob bombs, can you be more specific?

Once again a jail bum who doesn't know the first thing about LE operations, MOUs, budgeting or any other administrative task handled on a daily basis by the Sheriff and his staff. You have never prepared a budget, had to make tough choices, work within the framework of what the BOCC mandates is cut from the annual budget. Sheriff Gualtieri is by far the most experienced Sheriff this agency has ever had when it come to budgeting. The days of yesteryear and a BOCC that was made up of bubbas is long gone. I don't care who ER would bring in to plan and propose the annual budget. He will be unsuccessful because the county administrator and BOCC aren't our bubbas any more. All you have to do is tune in and watch the budgeting workshops. Review the county administrator's projections for the decline of annual revenues and you'll finally realize things will continue to get worse for at least 4 more years before they get better. If you think I'm blowing smoke, as a supervisor that actually orks on the agency's budget and see if it's true.
