Sheriff: Unauthorized Pursuit

I’m working on a PoliSci paper and I find aspects of Bill Waldron’s candidacy interesting, particularly the kernels of political alienation and social discontent. Within this context, I detected similar seeds of thought in two other public figures, Judyth Vary Baker and Judge Matthew McMillan.

Conspiracy theory as political gambit?

Mr. Waldron’s campaign uses a 2008 newspaper article to support his political ideology. “Was Manatee Sheriff Target of Prosecution or Persecution?”* by Susan Taylor Martin is the work of a seasoned reporter. The question is compelling and the reporter seemed to side with the former (“prosecution”) when viewed in the context of allied stories by the same reporter. But was the latter (“persecution”) true?

The passage of time is a researcher’s luxury. The online newspaper article still contains comments from original interested parties, with one pointing out that the topic was a belated ten years old at the time of publication, and another’s message to the reporter, “You got suckered.”

The timeline was a decade after the 1998 Manatee County judicial election and its contentious aftermath.

Published accounts indicate Judge Matthew McMillan sustained a post-election fall from grace, and that he intended to pursue the “incestuous 1,000” – a term for the Good Old Boys -- public officials and community leaders whom he alleged controlled Manatee County.

McMillan found an ally within the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Tampa, one who himself was on a precipitous ledge and had no apparent intention of leaving quietly. This McMillan ally had used his federal powers in ways that seemed to indicate to his supervisors he was in unauthorized pursuit of his own version of an “incestuous 1,000.” He too had political ambitions.

The 2008 Prosecution/Persecution newspaper article evoked the sentiments of former Judge McMillan. Pursuing “number 13” – the sheriff -- expanded to include the Manatee sheriff’s wife, son, brother-in-law, nephew, business associates, political associates and friends.

It’s documented that former Judge McMillan sought and received assistance from J.A.I.L. and Jail4Judges. Internet support comes from Carl Bernofsky’s TulaneLink and Ronald Branson, both with sovereign ideation and affiliations. In this year’s sheriff’s race, Bill Waldron draws Internet support from similar people and groups.

McMillan’s affiliate, formerly in federal employment, is ex-military. McMillan is a former cop. In May 20011, FormerCopp left a message on the Prosecution/Persecution comment section, three years after the story’s publication: “Well, well . . . it's been a long time since the debate on this article appeared, but it's time for people to stand up…” Sentiments are still alive.

As well, Judyth Vary Baker still has a following, attracted to her view that Lee Harvey Oswald was a patriot.

That story in the St Pete Times was old news at the time she wrote it, 10 yrs old. I guess the sources had her convinced Bradenton,Sarasota reporters were too corrupt and in cahoots with the good old boys to write about it. Well I can remember that’s all they wrote about for a number of years.When they realized who they were dealing with they must of got it that the kookoos were off their nut because nothing ever panned out. I always thought the soveriegn citizens were involved in that stuff in the St Pete paper. She says she got thousands of pages of records and is that paper terrorism or something like it. Also thinking some were fed gov records being misused by a inside source.
