    Re: Transporter and dealer tags?

Dealer tags cost more than the average tag and they can only be affixed to one vehicle at a time so who cares? These types of posts make us look alike a Chicken S&%t agency!

If only troopers would focus on serious driving violations instead of writing so many chicken Sh!t citations people would start to respect troopers again.

Troopers didn't start the thread, MORON.

Or you could just enforce the laws that you swore to uphold that were created by the Florida Legislature. You see, this isn't MHP (My Highway Patrol), to do as you wish but it is the FHP (Florida Highway Patrol) and you took an oath to uphold the laws of this state. Just do what you are paid to do and enough with you deciding what is important to you. Enforce all traffic laws.

    Re: Transporter and dealer tags?

    The correct answer is this:
You first need to stop the vehicle for a primary violation like a red light, etc.
While talking to the driver, you have a right to find out what they are using the vehicle for.
Are they truly "transporting" the vehicle, if it is a dealer tag, is it being used for inventory transfer, loaner, or a demo?
If no to all of the above you may:
    1. Cite then for Veh not Registered
    2. Cite them for Tag Not Assigned
    3. Seize the plate and place it into your Property Unit
    4. Tow the vehicle
    5. Notify DHSMV Motor Services in your area and they will investigate at http://www.flhsmv.gov/dmv/BUR_Field_Ops_Address.pdf
No...I am not a Trooper but a local....

The statute needs to be changed! People are constantly abusing dealer tags.
    You're right about that!

Dealer tags are not the same as transporter tags and definitely may be used for personal business as per the following: or, for a clearer copy on letterhead,

    SUBJECT: Use ofDealer License Plates
It has come to our attention that some motor vehicle dealerships have experienced lawenforcementactions:reg&rding theuseofdealerlicenseplates. WehopetInslettercan provide the clm'ification needed to solve the dilemma.
Section 320.13 (1) (a), Florida Statutes provides in pmi that any licensed motor vehicle dealer may, upon payment ofthe license tax imposed by s. 320,08 (12), secure one or more dealer license plates, which are valid for use on motor vehicles owned by the dealer to whom such license plates are issued while th-e motor vehicles are in inventory and for sale, or 'while being operated in connection with such dealer's business, but arc not valid for use for hue. Dealer license plates may not be used on any tow truck or wrecker unless the tow truck or . wrecker is being demonstrated. for sale, and the dealer license plates may not be used on a vehicle used to transport another motor vehicle for the motor vehicle dealer.
The above simply means that dealers may operate vehicles all the highways of Florida at any time for personal business so long as the vehicle is in inventory and for sale or while being operated in connection with such dealer's business. Dealer license plates are 110t registered to anyone vehicle and may be used on any vehicle in the dealer's inventory. Also, dealers are not required to take title in their name for motor vehicles held in their inventOJ.Y and fux sale.
Hopefully this will clear up any confusion regarding the use ofdealer license

    Re: Transporter and dealer tags?

FYI - Citations issued for "tag not assigned" are improper as this offense is considered a 2nd degree misdemeanor that did not occur in your presence. (Case law dictates the officer must actually witness the driver attaching the tag and then driving). Citing for "unregistered vehicle" is the appropriate enforcement action.
