    Rapid response to Active Shooter

    RAPID RESPONSE TO ACTIVE SHOOTER
For those not familiar. This concept resulted from Columbine Colorado when local Law Enforcement ( as they were taught to do ) stayed under cover while the shootings took place and waited for SWAT.
Under 'Rapid Response' agencies and Officers accept that we live in a different world where mass violence is more common. Agency SOP's that adopt this concept instruct their Officers that when they arrive at a mass violence incident, they may have to enter and engage immediately with what ever resources are there. This might mean that two Officers have to enter a school, work place, restaurant etc. and engage an unknown threat. Yes ! That is a deadly serious concept ! But, what is worse, two trained Officers shoot it out with one or more lunatics or unarmed helpless victims are slaughtered?
Agencies that adopt 'Rapid Response' must then train their Officers with tactical entry and tactical search techniques using different numbers of Officers on entry and different numbers of subjects, hostages etc and different sized and types of structures. Dispatchers are brought into the loop to immediately send their Officers to assist other agencies in these situations. Finally. Administrators that agree to this,' must accept the fact that Officers are being asked to take on risks formally reserved for SWAT teams. So, superior weapons need to be provided for fast employment. Get the superior weapons out of the Administrators Office and into the field ! I have had this training using both paint ball and simunition. The good news is we rapidly engaged the killers and saved innocent lives. The bad news ? A lot of COPs were hit by paint balls and would have been killed or injured in a real situation. The more training we have and the better weapons that are available, the more this new paradigm of 'Rapid Response' can be realistically adopted as the future for American Law Enforcement and the lives of the public and the protectors can be saved.
