CHICAGO—
Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy has posthumously restored the star of an officer who was allegedly beaten to death by her grandson.

Officer Hester Scott was stripped of her police powers in 2007 after her grandson, who is now charged with her murder, accused her of abuse.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services found no basis for the accusation. However, the police department launched its own investigation. Scott was placed on desk duty pending its completion.

Fraternal Order of Police President Mike Shields said he discussed Scott's case with McCarthy on Monday and was told Tuesday of his action.

Prosecutors say 15-year-old Keshawn Perkins beat and stabbed his grandmother and dumped her body in the backyard after she caught him skipping school. He is charged as an adult.
