The Houston Police Officers’ Union is asking District Attorney Pat Lykos to investigate Councilwoman Jolanda Jones for practicing law without a license.

The union includes two legal documents with September dates signed by Jones with a letter being delivered to Lykos today.

The State Bar of Texas suspended the councilwoman’s law license on Sept. 1 because she had failed to pay her annual membership dues and her attorney occupational tax. She was reinstated on Sept. 30 when she paid up.

“We respecfully request that your office investigate and bring the appropriate criminal charges if it is determined that there was a clear violation of any state laws….” wrote Ray Hunt, a union vice president, to Lykos.

Hunt is also the person whose complaint against Jones launched a city investigation of Jones for using her Council phone number on a card that also solicited business for her private law practice. The months-long investigation and its fallout ended with no sanctions against Jones but an agreement that she would take the number off the card.

Update: A spokeswoman for Jones responded via email:

It’s starting to look a lot like Groundhog Day at HPOU. If the sun comes up, then there’s a good chance that Ray Hunt will lodge a complaint somewhere.

The union also has filed a grievance with the State Bar against Jones, alleging she engaged in unethical behavior by using her city office to support her private law practice.

Jones has been an outspoken opponent of police brutality and was one of the first people to bring to light problems with the police department’s crime lab. Also, the card that was the subject to the complaint advises people “NEVER speak with the police” and is meant to advise people of their Ffith Amendment right to remain silent.
