OAKLAND -- A police pursuit of a stolen car near Lake Merritt on Saturday morning that saw the suspect briefly drive in the wrong direction on Interstate 580 ended after officers rammed the car to a stop, authorities said.

The suspect, a 29-year-old Oakland parolee, and one officer were injured. None of their names were released.

The chase started at 9:26 a.m. Saturday in the 3600 block of Webster Street when an officer spotted a Honda Accord reported stolen a week ago in Oakland.

Officers began pursuing the car on city streets, including the Grand Lake district. Near the intersection of MacArthur Boulevard and Grand Avenue, the Honda collided with a police car but kept going.

At one point the Honda started driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-580 before getting off the freeway near Oakland High School and then getting back on the freeway in the right direction, police said.

After exiting the freeway at Lake Shore, the Honda started driving on city streets toward Lake Merritt.

At 9:37 a.m., police rammed the Honda to a stop at the intersection of Brooklyn and Merritt avenues. An officer suffered a finger injury while pulling the suspect from the car.

The driver, who sustained unknown injuries, was pulled from the Honda and taken to a hospital. His condition was not immediately known.

The suspect was arrested on a parole violation and suspicion of auto theft.
