The idea of pension reform in North Miami Beach has spurred both protest and applause.

Proponents say it's about time the city tightens its belt, or else residents may bear the brunt of higher taxes or reduced services if pensions continue to take a heavy toll on the city's budget.

In the meantime, city employees chafe at thethought of the council tinkering with their pensions -- and have met the plan with a door-to-door campaign and vocal protests.

Police officers and supporters have marched in front of city hall waving signs and chanting ``Hands off our pensions, hands off our pensions!''

``The city is just not playing fair, they want to bully the employees,'' said Officer Mike Pons, union president.

North Miami Beach police officers are represented by the International Union of Police Associations, an affiliate of the AFL-CIO.

Whether North Miami Beach is able to pass a comprehensive pension reform plan before the budget deadline on Oct. 1 may make the difference between layoffs.

Tuesday, the council will take up the issue once again after four out of five pension-related ordinances were tabled at a July 20 meeting.

Officials estimate North Miami Beach could save more than $4 million in the 2010-11 fiscal year if the council passes the plan.

``The budget is balanced right there,'' Assistant City Manager Roslyn Weisblum said.

If the council does not pass the pension ordinances, ``there would be layoffs,'' Weisblum said.

The council is scheduled to vote on ordinances that would merge the general employee and manager pensions and eliminate language that allow members of the city's pensions to vote on amendments to their plans.

The council will also vote on second reading to significantly reduce the city's supplemental contribution to the police pension and increase the time to reach a funded ratio of 70 percent from Oct. 1, 2013, to Oct. 1 2020.

At a budget workshop in June, City Manager Kelvin Baker warned that rising pension costs could cripple the city's finances.

Mayor Myron Rosner said while he supports the plan to reform pensions, a long-term solution would require the city's police department to roll back their salaries and address inefficiencies without laying off any officers.

``This may get us through this budget year,'' he said, ``but it doesn't deal with the underlying issue of fixing the problem.''

Is that right, Mr. Mayor? So the millions of dollars lost due to no over site and fraud at City Hall under your administration should not be looked into huh? Not to mention the fact that a person in purchasing who was arrested for fraud and Federal Grant Theft by taking money that was intended to be used for the community. But I'm sure you did not know about it, even though you sat on the same committee with him. Lets not forget your over blown medical expenses that were paid for by the citizens of this city. (I'm sure you would have gotten that wheel chair with your own money if you had to pay for it out of your own pocket right? NOT). Lets not forget the active cases currently being investigated in the building department and on the active case on YOU for MISUSE OF POWER.

So lets sit down and talk about inefficiencies, no let the public read the facts and decide for themselves who is inefficient because your word means NOTHING For the exception of Derose the only councilman/woman that can look at himself/herself in the mirror and not see a warm pile of Shite. Now stick that in your pipe and smoke it. NO, wait read that at council.

You are an embarrassment to the community, the public office, the city, the residents, and every employee in the city.

Your right on the money. That idiot is the mayor and he has no clue about what he is or isn't allowed to say at meetings. Your the MAYOR stop making a fool of yourself! That's right u can't help it. I guess its only fair that the guy in charge is the biggest idiot. Look at ralphy he's a prime example. The entire leadership of our once great city is a joke. And like the previous poster said Mr. Derose we respect you. At least you realize that we just want to be treated fairly and that we're not asking for to much. Screw the rest of you who are doing nothing but trying to screw us. We'll see who wins in the end. .
