Lehigh Acres man dies after gunfire with a deputy

The deputy involved in today’s Lehigh Acres fatal shooting will be placed on administrative leave with pay, Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott wrote in an e-mail.

It’s still unclear whether the man killed shot at deputies before they opened fire on him, but he was armed.

It’s appropriate for deputies to open fire on a citizen if they or other people are threatened with serious injury or death, Scott said.

“Encounters with armed subjects are a reality we realize when we take the job, a reality we train for, and a reality we regret,” Scott said. “However, we will always meet deadly force with deadly force.”

A blue tarp covers the man’s face. He’s sitting in beige shorts in his backyard, facing the sun.

Up until about 5 p.m., the body of the man who had exchanged gunfire with a deputy was uncovered, his head arched backwards. Neighbors Cathi and Bob Boivin, who live two doors down, said they were disgusted.

“I didn’t hear it, but my A/C guy heard two shots,” Bob Boivin said. “His father is a very nice individual. His father has been living here for years. It doesn’t make sense.”

According to the sheriff’s office: Deputies had come to the house earlier in the day to serve the warrant, but left without serving it. They later got an anonymous tip stating the man was home and returned to the house. That’s when the incident occurred.

Suicide by cop. End of story. Get over it. And don't ***** about him being uncovered in his backyard... You don't wanna see? Don't look. They were doing what's called an investigation.

Perhaps MCU should have formed a circle around the body, held hands, and prayed for the world to "Stop the hate, stop the violence!" This would have shown the proper level of sensitivity. Geeez!

Good job, buddy! Everything is going to be fine!
