    fhp and going to college

is anyone going to college while beinng a trooper? Do they work with you about your schedule? let's say you want to take evening classes during the week, do they help you out with giving you a good shift to work. And i heard that if your a FHP, and you go to a state univeristy, then you dont have to pay for it, is that true? and how long do those benefits last? thanks.

Good luck getting work schedules that allow you to take classes for a full semester unless you are in a district that has permanent shifts. You're here to do a job, not get a free education from a regionally accredited university!

It is possible, though the rotating schedules can be difficult to overcome. It depends where you are, some supervisors will assist while others will not. Also, in my district, several Troopers swapped shifts sometimes to help out their fellow Trooper go to classes--so it can be done, depending on where you are and who you work with.

Yes the state will pay for it, try for online classes.

    FYI

ON-Line courses from proprietary schools (Florida Metropolitan U, U of Phoenix, etc) are a joke. Their credits and degrees will NOT be accepted for transfer by traditional universities due those "real" universities' accrediting boards' regulations. If the college is not accredited, for example in Florida, by SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools), your credits and degree are worthless and you were defrauded. More and more proprietary colleges are being put on businesses' "NOT ACCEPTABLE for use in employment" lists.

However, if as a state employee, you attend one of the "State" universities or colleges, those credits are free (up to six per semester) and are worth spending the time registering and attending.

Yup.....very true. Not sure if any of you watch PBS's documentary show "Frontline" but they did a segment on these for-profit universities called "College, Inc." a few weeks ago. You can watch it online here: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontl...llegeinc/view/

And by the way, most of the "real" state universities offer online classes as well, so you might as well get a real degree!
