Former Hialeah mayor offers advice to the city

Ex-mayor Raul Martinez gave the Hialeah City Council a talking-to last week.

At its meeting Tuesday, Martinez read out loud from the charter, citing the council's power to investigate city affairs.

``I think it's your responsibility and your duty to empower yourselves and start looking into what are the real issues with the finances of the city,'' he said, shaking his finger. ``Is it a cash-flow problem? It could be.''

Martinez said his visit was prompted by rumors about the city's finances -- which Hialeah's unions, deadlocked on contract talks, have questioned.

Councilwoman Vivián Casáls-Muñoz said Martinez' comments are ``very valid'' considering his experience as a mayor and as a Hialeah resident.

The ex-mayor echoed the unions' request: a forensic audit. To bolster his advice, Martinez pointed to the council's request for an investigation of the Hialeah Housing Authority earlier this year.

The rumor has it that the hit will be between 15-25%. That will make Hialeah PD the worst paid police department in Dade County. I heard Hialeah PD is number 29 of 32 right now. Cut the s--t-out and get together. Worst paid=worst service! Don't let this political monster run al over the police department and the rest of the fine City of Hialeah employees. If Robaina prefers to balance his budget from each and every city employees back and not raise taxes a little before you guys step in, then give it to him. Let the criminals take over the streets...
