5 Detroit Officers Shot 1 Killed

    From Detroit Free Press

Detroit Police Chief Warren Evans today called veteran Officer Brian Huff, who was killed in a shootout early today, “a gentle giant” and added that the suspect should have been in jail for prior offenses.

Evans, while avoiding specific criticism of any judge or the judicial system, clearly indicated he was unhappy that suspect Jason Gibson, who has several aliases, was not behind bars given several prior run-ins with police.

In addition to Huff, five other officers were injured, Evans reported. Four were shot and a fifth injured an ankle during the incident.
    Cops ambushed

Police responding to reports of gunfire inside an east-side Detroit duplex early today were ambushed in a hail of bullets, authorities said.

The slain officer, Huff, was married with a 10-year-old child and had been with the department for 12 years, officials said.

As of noon, two officers had been released from St. John Hospital & Medical Center. St. John Hospital spokesman Brian Taylor said two officers remaining at the hospital are both in good condition, but probably will not be released today.

The other shot officers are: Kasper Harrison, Steven Schram, Joseph D’Angelo and John Dunlap. Officer Bryan Glover twisted his ankle while trying to pull Huff away from the house after the shooting, said Commander Steve Dolunt.

The suspect, Gibson, 25, also was hospitalized with a gunshot to the lower back. Roach said that man, whose home was searched a few hours after the shooting, is the only suspect so far. He was in fair condition and also was expected to remain at the hospital at least overnight, Taylor said.

The officers were responding to a 3:30 a.m. 911 call from a neighbor reporting that shots had been fired inside a vacant unit of the duplex on Schoenherr near 8 Mile, Roach said.

When officers arrived, they were met with gunfire, he said.

Officer Bill Trzos, a 10-year-department veteran who was at the scene when Huff went down, said his ears were ringing and his heart hurt after the shooting.

"The phone call to my mom -- 'I'm fine, but everyone else is hurt' -- that was the hardest thing," Trzos said, forbidden to talk specifically about the shooting itself.

His wife, another Eastern District officer home sleeping on her day off, got a call from a friend that there was an officer down. But it took her an agonizing minute to reach Trzos to find out they lost a beloved comrade.

“Just a good guy – just always enjoyed coming to work,” Trzos said about Huff.

Huff’s death marks the first time since 2004 that a Detroit officer has been killed in the line of duty, officials said.

A .45-caliber handgun, believed to be the suspect’s weapon, was recovered from the scene, Roach said.

Evans told reporters that Huff was a great officer who was “loved by all.”

Police descended on the Schoenherr scene, scouring the vacant duplex, as well as the neighboring unit.

Officers were joined by federal agents with the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in another morning search across town in the 3900 block of Somerset, where the injured suspect allegedly lives.

City officials said they were heartbroken by the shooting. Detroit Mayor Dave Bing met with Huff’s wife and family members of the injured officers early in the morning.

He called on the community to step up and show their support of the men and women who patrol the neighborhoods — and to help police “stop this madness.”

“This makes absolutely no sense,” Bing said.

Police recovered marijuana from inside the duplex, Roach said. Neighbors said it was known as a drug house.

Sheila Brown, 47, who lives around the corner, said people walking by the home were regularly harassed by men inside offering to sell them marijuana.

“They say, ‘Hey, hey, we got weed over here,’ ” she said.

Brown said she heard the early-morning gunfire and sensed something terrible had happened.

“I knew somebody was dead,” she said. “I felt it in my heart.”
    Neighbors used to gunfire

Brown and other neighbors said the area’s biggest problem is vacant houses taken over by drug dealers. Many said they’ve called police to report squatters living in the vacant homes but have gotten little response.

In recent years, hearing gunfire at night has become commonplace, said April Lewis, 46, who lives nearby on Collingham.

“We hear it every night at 11 p.m.,” she said. “It’s not one or two shots. It’s six, seven, eight shots.”

The pops will quiet for a half-hour, then start up again.

“We’re used to gunshots, and no one’s looking out anymore,” she said.
