About 280 jail deputies at BSO will get layoff news Friday

    > Posted by Brittany Wallman on April 29, 2010 04:22 PM
Friday will be a somber day at the Broward County jails. An estimated 280 jail deputies will be called in and told they might lose their jobs, union officials warned.

Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti has made no public pronouncements about his proposed budget and how he'll cut millions from it, as ordered by the County Commission.

But jail deputies have already been told that many jobs are at risk, as the sheriff contemplates closing one of the two towers at the Paul Rein Detention Facility in Pompano Beach, sheriff's Sgt. Tony Marciano said Thursday. The layoff proposal also includes replacing about 200 sworn detention deputies with civilians in the “control rooms’’ at the jails. Those rooms are staffed by deputies who watch over the inmates and deputies while they're interacting together.

He said deputies who work in the control rooms will be offered the possibility of keeping their jobs at lower pay, possibly $10,000 less than what they make now. An additional 84 deputies who work in the jails, and six sergeants, would lose their jobs outright, Marciano said.

And the final component of the layoff plan, he said, is to close one of the satellite jail booking offices in the county, though Marciano doesn’t yet know which one.

The deputies whose jobs are at risk are members of the Federation of Public Employees union, which endorsed Lamberti's election opponent, Scott Israel. The road deputies are members of Police Benevolent Association union, or PBA, which endorsed Lamberti.

The PBA deputies will have a better day Friday. That's the day their pay raises kick in, Marciano said.

The sheriff has said in the past that using civilians in the control rooms presents a safety issue. Read the jump to see it in his own words.

In an interdepartmental "Ask the Sheriff'' interchange, the control room issue was broached:

    Date: 08/12/2008
    Category: Detention
Question: Since the County Commissioners are trying to save money, what are the chances that you place civilians in the control rooms and also in the booking area, in order to place deputies where they are needed in the housing units. This will save the taxpayers money.

Answer:Thank you for your suggestion, but the Collective Bargaining Agreement prohibits this. Additionally, using civilians in place of certified deputies in these areas could present a safety issue.

I hope Ewing runs into Chance Ransom. Ewing could learn a thing or two from that proud American, Chance Ransom.
