PALM COAST -- A Flagler County sheriff's deputy was injured late this morning while working traffic duty, a Flagler County sheriff's spokeswoman said.

Sheriff's Sgt. Michael Van Buren, 42, was hurt when a tractor-trailer struck him while he was working at the intersection of Palm Coast Parkway and Interstate 95, said spokeswoman Debbie Johnson. The accident occurred shortly after an accident closed down both lanes of Palm Coast Parkway, emergency officials said. The sergeant was possibly directing traffic related to the earlier crash, Johnson said.

Van Buren, who is the supervisor of the Sheriff’s Office Traffic Unit in Palm Coast, suffered possible fractures and other injuries when he was struck at 11:41 a.m. His injuries are not considered life-threatening, Johnson said.

Van Buren was taken to Florida Hospital Flagler where he is being treated.

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the accident, Byrne said.
