Miami's Police Chief may be headed west

MPD Chief Timoney Refuses Comment On Potential New Job

Miami Police Chief John Timoney refused to comment on if he's looking to become the new police chief of the San Francisco Police Department. San Francisco is looking for a new chief, however, California law keeps the names of applicants confidential.

"He says 'no comment.' It's not a denial. It's not an admission. It's no comment," a spokesman for Timoney told CBS4's Gary Nelson.

Timoney's potential job hunting might be because he will lose his best friend in city government, Mayor Manny Diaz, who leaves office this year, according to Nelson. Diaz hired Timoney in 2003 and has stuck through him through good times and bad.

CBS4 News revealed in 2007 that Timoney accepted free use of a luxury SUV from a Lexus Dealer. He was subsequently fined and reprimanded by the state and county ethics commissions, and rebuked by Miami's Civilian Investigative Panel.

Timoney also drew criticism for his handling of the Free Trade Summit in Miami a few years ago. The summit was marred by alleged police abuses and a dozen lawsuits were filed which could cost the city millions eventually.

Timoney's department remains under investigation over allegations it cooked the books on crime statistics in an effort to make the area's crime problem look better than what was actually happening.
