Don't forget to lock your getaway car!

Leonard Levy, a career criminal who spent several years in prison for business burglaries, was released and eventually found work as a late night restaurant cleaner. It wasn't long before he went back to his old ways and started to break into businesses again. A restaurant owner in Land O Lakes Florida decided to send his adult son home with their car while he slept overnight on a cot in a back room of the restaurant so he could get an early start preparing food at his business in the morning. At 0300, he awoke to his front door being smashed in and observed a man trying to steal his cash register. The victim snuck out the back door and ran around to the parking lot when he remembered his own car was not there.

Fortunately, Leonard left his own car, engine running and door open, in the parking lot. The victim jumped in Leonard's car and left the scene while calling police.

Now poor Leonard, he came out to find his own car stolen. Instead of trying to report it stolen by an unknown person later on, Leonard walked to a payphone only 50 feet away and called the police to report that his car was just stolen! He put his screwdriver and money bag in the trash can next to the phone and waited for the police to arrive. When told we caught the guy who stole his car, Leonard demanded to await the arrival of the car thief. The thief arrived and a double ID took place. Leonard pointed out the business owner and said, "That's the guy that stole my car!" The business owner pointed out Leonard and said, "That's the guy that broke into my business!" Leonard got 8 3/4 years DOC this time.
