Kneejerk Reactions

This is yet one more example of the smoke and mirror kneejerk reaction show that the staff of the SPPD puts on in their ongoing attempt to convince the citizens of St Petersburg that crime is down and their safety is up.

During the recent city council session with the Chief, Councilmember Curren (sp) make a simple comment that she would like to see more officers randomly making contact with citizens. I have to believe that the intent was for officers to make mutual random contacts when time permits if they're out on calls or even when they are stopping at local businesses for a snack. The contacts should be non intrusive or interrogative and meant to instill openness and build some trust in the department.

As usual the immediate and careless response from the Chief is: EVERY PATROL OFFICER IS IMMEDIATELY ORDERED TO MAKE FIVE CITIZEN CONTACTS PER WEEK AND ENTER THEM INTO THE COMPUTER SYSTEM FOR TRACKING..NO EXCEPTIONS! The officers have to obtain demographic information and the number of contacts will be tracked and placed on a list every week to be analized. I can't imagine what type of investigation will be conducted on the officer who has less then five.

Leslie...Is this what you really want? What do you think those citizens are going to think when the officer who's trying to attain their quota of contacts asks for their name and birthday?

This is NOT building a relationship with the public or putting them at ease. This is making them feel like they live in a police state and even like they are criminals. This is the best example yet of the SPPD staff trying to justify everything they do through numbers and statistics.

Here's something they have yet to grasp: YOU CAN'T PROVE EVERYTHING THROUGH NUMBERS! YOU CAN'T INSTILL A SENSE OF SAFETY THROUGH STATISTICS!

This is the biggest joke of a response to any of the council's requests that I've ever seen. Its time that you councilmembers quit falling for the BS statistical garbage your fed and start seeing for yourself. I challenge each one of you! Come in and ride along with more then one officer on different shifts. Take a ride through different parts of the City during different times of the day and night. Go sit up in our communications center and watch the dispatchers scrambling to find officers to respond to the neverending stream of priority calls on the evening shift. DO SOMETHING OTHER THEN JUST SETTLING FOR THE FABRICATED STATISTICS !

You have know idea how low the morale is among the few officers (far less then what the fabricated numbers showed) who work the and you will never know unless you start seeking information from those who work the streets 24 hours a day and not sit behind closed doors for eight hours and go home far before the sun sets.

We're asking for you help to step in and fix this mess!!

Please enlighten us how the work of so many officers can possibly be quantified WITHOUT numbers. Without numbers backing up some officers being promoted or receiving desirable positions then the malcontents will say the administration is playing so-called "favorites". It's a no-win situation if you want to dismiss the use of numbers. Come up with a better solution and it's not reasonable that the administration come out and ride with every single officer repeatedly to judge their work.

They need to get their lazy asses out on the streets to see for themselves.

Once again the chief is trying to extend the olive branch and all you racist people can complain about is some trumped up idea that you are being made to actually talk to minorities without arresting one of them.

I am thanking the chief at least trying to break thru the racial barrier that exists between the department and the community.

keep you head up chief, times will get better. and we will overcome this crisis under your leadership.
