A shootout on the city's far west side Monday left a San Antonio police officer wounded, a vehicle burglary suspect dead and another suspect wounded, police officials said.

Officer Jeremy Swindells was shot in the leg and was listed in good condition at Wilford Hall Medical Center. The surviving suspect was wounded in the torso and was taken to University Hospital in critical condition.

According to a San Antonio Police Department news release, Swindells responded to a vehicle burglary call at 208 Dirschell at 8:56 a.m.

While the seven-year veteran was taking the report, the burglary victim saw his Toyota 4-Runner go by, the news release said. Swindells pursued the vehicle, which ended up crashing in the 9600 block of Sugarloaf Drive.

Two men jumped out of the vehicle and led Swindells on a foot chase, the report said. Swindells managed to apprehend one of the men.

While Swindells was handcuffing the man, he grabbed the officer's baton and began to beat Swindells with it, the report stated. During the assault, Swindells shot the man, killing him. While this was going on, the other suspect, who apparently jumped over a fence, opened fire on the lawman, the report stated. The officer was able to crawl for cover and returned fire on the man, who fled on foot but was captured about 20 minutes later by other officers.

The names of the men will be released after charges are filed and next-of-kin is notified.

As per department policy, Officer Swindells will be placed on administrative duty during the investigation.
