Two police officers were shot Monday night by a man who was later found dead in his home, police said.

Officer Brandy Roell, who recently graduated from the police academy a month ago and a mother of three, was shot in the lower back. Roell, 30, was airlifted to University Hospital, where she was in stable condition, police officials said.

Officer Lawrence Robarts, 30, an eight-year veteran, was transported to Wilford Hall Medical Center with gunshot wounds to the shoulder, leg and knee. Robarts also was in stable condition.

McManus said Roell, Robarts and Officer Samuel Sedillo, an 8 year veteran, tried to serve an arrest warrant at a home in the 3100 block of Redstart at 6:30 p.m. when the suspect, identified as Andres Vargas, opened fire. Sedillo was not hit by the gunfire. Responding officers returned fire on the suspect, who continued to shoot at the officers.

After hours of negotiations with Vargas were unsuccessful, police forced their way into the home around midnight and found the suspect dead from what appeared to be a self-inflected gunshot wound.

According to a police news release, Vargas was wanted on a warrant for deadly conduct after he shot at his ex-wife with an AK-47 assault rifle Saturday.

The shooting happened less than 12 hours after another San Antonio Police officer was wounded in the line of duty.

Officer Jeremy Swindells was wounded in the leg in a shooting that left one suspect dead and another injured. Swindells, who was listed in good condition at Wilford Hall, was investigating a vehicle robbery.
