Creek PD gets new hardware
The Coconut Creek Police Department is going to get some new high-tech equipment.
The City Commission recently approved the department's request to buy three T-3 Series units, a rugged three-wheeled vehicle that can be used in various environments, including schools and shopping malls.
Department personnel test-drove two of the highly maneuverable units at this year's Butterfly Festival that were on loan from the vendor. They were impressed.
"Their performance was outstanding," Police Chief George Raggio said. "They will be able to be utilized not only at all of our city events, but they will also be used in our schools by our [school resource officers]."
"It is an alternative vehicle that we can use to patrol our greenways and shopping malls," Det. Tony Avello said.
The department also is replacing its 14-year-old Firearms Training Simulator with a new computer-based, interactive, use-of-force training lab.
The lab is a full-size, high-definition system in which a trainee enters the room and must interact with the video as scenarios are played under a wide variety of topics and environments. It will put officers in life-and-death simulations to see how they react. Supervisors will be able to critique the officers and train them for different field encounters.
"It is a vital piece of training equipment for our officers, especially in this day and age, with the violence toward law enforcement," Raggio said. "Any progressive training we can give our officers, in life-threatening situations, is essential."
The equipment in being purchased through trust fund money that comes from the confiscation of cars, money and paraphernalia used by arrested drug dealers.
"The total cost of the equipment is $81,975 and comes at no expense to Coconut Creek taxpayers," Raggio said.

What's the take home car policy for CCPD? and are you issued your weapons or do you have to purchase your own?
I'm trying to compare all the agencies in Broward and Palm Beach. Thanks!

Are your take home vehicles assigned to you after FTO or probation? My department seems to be the only one that waits till your probation is up.

I liked the part of the story that said the rugged 3 wheel vehicle was test driven at the butterfly festival.
