    Telecommunicator Week

Can anyone offer some ideas on how your agencies celebrate National Telecommunicator Week? Any ideas or comments are greatly appreciated!

    got an idea

spend the week calling your legislators and ask them to certify 911 operators & dispatchers and give them special risk in the FRS system. that's the best celebration and recognition they can be given !!!

    NTW

In the past our previous Training Coordinator would make a big deal out of NTW. We had different foods catererd in by different companies almost every day of the week. We were allowed to wear civillian clothes all week instead of our uniforms. Each day would be a different theme so you could dress in sports, hawaiian, etc. We had guest speakers and there were always gifts given to the dispatchers. I.e. 911 cups, lanyards, stickers etc. She also made sure that the officers were aware of the what week it was and on many occasions they would bring in plaques, certificates of apprecation and sometimes food for the squads. We always thought it was really nice that she made such a big deal for us.

I doubt this year we will have anything. We no longer have a Training Coordinator!!! And we probably never will since they want to cut the position due to budget restraints. (all though the Mayor has always said Communications would never be effected by the budge cuts). I think the new Manager is trying to make a name for himself by saying the position is no longer justified and how much money the city will be saving by not filling the position. It is of my opinion that the city will save a whole lot of money by assigning a Captain, Major or LT. to oversee Communications and eliminate the Manager position. At least some one from law enforcement has some knowledge as to what we do in Communications, and isnt totally clueless as to what goes on.

Anyway, Good luck on your NTW week. The dispatchers are the most underappreciated position within the Police Dept. So please everyone give some kudo when deserved. Be safe everyone

We have our 5th annual open house to coordinate with Telecommunicators weeks. We turn the entire parking lot (about 1 city block) into an outdoor event with the following items.

Static display of emergency vehicles (15)

Safety house/ smoke house - for the kids to learn about getting out of a house

Safety city- kids ride bikes and learn how to read street signs.

Firefighter challenge- kids get dressed up in their sized bunker gear and to a challenge course.

Bounce house, face painting, balloons, free hot dogs & drinks sno cones, popcorn, cotton candy, smoothies.

    Lots of games with prizes.

We get our vendors to donate 6 bicycles and all kinds of goodies and gift card.

Inside of the building we do mock 911 calls with them and have a live CAD demo but with a test database so we don't accidentally dispatch a call. We also let them see the 911 center through a large glass window and talk about how we operate.

This year we are partnering with the YMCA and their Healthy Kids Day and they are sponsored by ****s sporting goods and the 1st 200 families with get a large bag of goodies that includes footballs and basketballs. They will also be having educational classes and demonstrations. WII competition, Dance Dance Revolution game

I would encourage anyone that can stop by.

We try to encourage our comm operators to answer the radio without saying 10-9, hang up the personal phone call, minimize the solitare game, and shove aside the large plate of nachos. We then try to solicit a response without an attitude, give our location the third time, give the tag a second time, and finally, we go and hide some place until the shift is over. Happy Tele Communications Week, or whatever it's called!

Luckily those nachos don't go straight to their hips.

We try to encourage our officers to answer the radio without having to call them 3 times, call them by their name, multi-select and tone them out, and send an another officer to their last known location; hang up the personal call that they are conducting with the department issued cell phone causing them to go over the 500 alloted minutes a month; shove themselves away from the lunch room table at the hospital while gorging themselves on free food. We then try to get a response from the officer that is not dripping in disdain and disgust, give us a location that actually is a real address in the city, have to raise you three times to get you to give us that made up location, tell me to 23 on the tag, and finally, go hide at a fire station and unplug your mdt terminal and somehow always the same officers having trouble with their avls towards the end of their shift or towards their 10-10 or 10-40. See people it is a two way street
