Deputy dumps quadriplegic from wheelchair to the ground

Explain this one away....enjoy the IA!

Deputy dumps man in wheelchair on the ground

Tampa, Florida - Brian Sterner broke his neck almost 14 years ago and is a quadriplegic.

Sterner, who can drive, was arrested on a traffic violation. When he was booked into the Orient Road Jail last month, Sterner couldn’t believe what happened.

He says a deputy looked at him and didn’t believe he was a quadriplegic. She walked behind him, took the handles on the back of the hospital-grade wheel chair and dumped it forward.

Sterner says he tried to roll as he was going down, but hit so hard he thought he had broken two ribs. Then, while he was on the floor, deputies frisked him and tried to get him back into the chair.

Sterner says he told them how to pick him up and put him back into the chair, but because he can’t feel anything from his breastbone down, he says he was injured and didn’t know it. Sterner thought he had broken two ribs, but jail x-rays showed that wasn't true.

The Hillsborough Sheriff's Office didn't know anything about the incident until we showed them their own tape. Now an investigation is underway.

J.D. Calloway, a spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office, says this has all come to light today, so this review is very active.

While we tried to get a written report about the incident, the major who runs the Orient Road Jail told us there is no incident report, because as far as they are concerned, they didn't have a problem with, or cause a problem to, an inmate in a wheelchair.

But don’t tell that to Brian Sterner.

Sterner says it's incredibly degrading and it’s an example of how poorly trained the Hillsborough Sheriff's Office is. He adds, if they’re trying to figure out if somebody needs to be in a wheelchair or not, there are many other ways to do it than to dump somebody on their face.

I agree, this time the line was crossed. This will end in a multi-million dollar settlement. Being dumped out of his chair is the best thing that ever happened to this guy.

Heads, many heads should roll over this one. 1st you have a female CPL standing there doing nothing to the officer that did the "dumping". Then you have another supervisor walking passed the camera laughing. Now you know this guy had to go and say something to a buddy as he looks like he thought it was just so funny.

It is time for Sheriff Gee to set examples of what he wants is Office to be known for. It is time he holds some of his supervisors accountable. To often his supervisors get a slap on the wrist, a transfer to another district, and then another cushy job as soon as one is available. We all know this happens far to often.

This can't be, after "beentheredunnit" speaks of how almighty HCSO is and other agencies have malcontents, and yet here you are on the news again. No wonder the Sheriff can’t afford to give you a raise, between paying out the lawsuits and doubling the size of profession standards he is broke.

    Joe,

I am shocked at you and your comments. Have you looked at the whole tape? NO. If you get the chance to see it you will notice that the tape is cut and spliced. You will notice the Cpl. that you think is laughing at the situation was not even in the area/room when the 10-15 came out of the wheelchair. You will notice that the inmate is in the wheelchair, then on the floor, then is back in the chair when the Cpl. comes into the area. The Cpl. goes out of camera view and then comes back across the area talking to someone on the opposite side of the room. In other words the Cpl. was not in the area when the incident happened, therefore could not have been laughing at something he did not see, and had no knowledge of. They could have cut and pasted footage of you laughing in the booking area and put it into the news piece and made the same comment about you.
