Does anyone have info on hiring with GBI if you are from out of state, 30 years on the job, 2300 hrs training, and a 4 year degree ? Also are they well thought of in Ga? Do they take laterals ? Thanks

This would be a good place to start. Copy and paste in your browser. It should take you to the GBI employment page.
    Good Luck

GBI is a good agency, they operate a very large crime lab and GCIC, they mainly assist smaller agencies with major cases in more rural areas of the state. They also conduct a lot of internal affairs/public corruption cases for local/county agencies. They have primary jurisdiction over narcotics and operate several multi agency drug task forces. They also have a terrorism task force. The pay sucks but overall its a good place to work. A lot of young agents use it as a stepping stone to go federal so you have a decent amount of turn over.

The original poster stated in his username he was from Central Florida so he is used to dealing with your counter parts, F.D.L.E. (a.k.a. The Alphabet Police) and is familiar with their ability to force themselves on other agencies cases where they are not needed, but because the agents have to justify doing something they go there anyway. True, much smaller and rural agencies do benefit from GBI's money to conduct investigations and its equipment, but most of your metropolitan areas are quite self-sufficient and could assist each other with a mutual aid compact, eliminating the need for your positions in that area of the state (quite like F.D.L.E.).

    Re: GBI

The GBI does little in the way of criminal investigations in metro Atlanta, they mainly support metro agencies with officer involved use of force investigations or major internal affairs investigations and operate crime labs, GCIC, etc.
Most of GA is very rural and in need of GBI. You have a lot of Sheriff's Dept. in GA with less than 20 deputies. 1 major case would break the budget. GA has a lot less people than FL and a lot more rural areas in need of a state support agency like the GBI.
The GBI is so underfunded they almost never poke their heads into anything in metro Atlanta unless asked.

    Re: GBI

The GBI has almost worked themselves out of a job. Their crime lab sucks and most of their agents are right out of college with no experience. They require a four year degree and have one of the worst pay scales in GA law enforcement. Anyone with any sense that has a four year degree will choose a federal agency with a retirement and good salary.

No one with any sense stays at the GBI for more than 2 years...

    Re: GBI

For most the GBI is a stepping stone out of college where agents work 3 or 3 years then go to the FBI and other such federal agencies. Why stay in podunk Georgia making horrible pay when you can live in a major city making good money with the FBI.

    Re: GBI

I agree the GBI has always been a stepping stone for college kids wanting a career in LE. But, that only started with the GBI when they startin requiring their agents to have a four year degree. I'm sure they were trying to do a good thing but it has pretty much back fired on them. Their turn over rate is unreal for 2 and three year agents leaving them for the feds. What were they thinking?

    Re: GBI

To those bashing the GBI you fail to realize that the majority of Georgia is very rural and most agencies are small.

There are more than 40 counties in the state where if you call 911 in an unincorporated part of the county they have to call and wake up the deputy to respond. Thats how rural many counties in GA are.

The GBI works ALL of the major crimes in these counties much like the state police do up north. The GBI also operates several drug task forces in GA.

I would not recommend working here becuase of the low pay. You also need to realize that you will be stationed in a rural part of GA for most of your career. Very few agents are in larger cities like Atlanta.
