Are the judges allowed to be armed in the courthouse?

If a judge can get away with using a ****** behind the bench while a trail is going on... im sure no one will know if a firearm is on his waist or ankle...

Finally this post may have been put to good use. A news channel did a segment on this topic Friday night and interviewed court house personnel including judges and the Frank DeMario. The PBA may be looking into this after so many years. There is NO logical reason for Officers to be unarmed in our own court house. There is a huge safety issue for uniformed cops to be without guns or tasers.

I saw the new segment last night, too, but from what I saw, it appears the Chief Judge (Kroll) is never going to reconsider this matter unless something breaks bad here and we all go running out, instead of in.

I think the news media should do an update to inform the public of the double standard currently in place ... not only as a LEO but as a citizen, too, I'd definitley like to know why Kroll very much allows her Judges to be armed for their own protection in our courthouse, however, we are not.

It's interesting that some of the previous posters seem to want to blame the PBA for not doing enough about this issue. The fact is, the PBA as well as the Sheriff and Chiefs, have been asking the Chief Judge to change this rule for years. The courthouse is like an Embassy; it's soverign territory, ruled by the Chief Judge. If he/she doesn't want anyone but the courthouse deputies carrying firearms, then that's the rule. Neither the PBA, the Sheriff or all the Chiefs combined can do anything about it. The current media attention regarding this issue is great; hopefully the Chief Judge will feel some pressure to make a change. In the meantime lock up your firearm, magazines, pocket knife, OC, Taser, ASP and Ninja throwing stars.

The Chiefs of Police might have input on the issue, but they have NO CONTROL of it. The CHief Judge makes the decision...She ws on Channel 5 last night talking about an ancient Federal study of the issue. Politics is Politics so it will be a tender subject. Just 1 guys humble opinion but i wish the SHeriff would send the Chief Judge a memo indicating PBSO will either be armed in the courthouse or NOT appearing for trials. But this will not happen...politics at its finest. She should at least split the difference and allow any agency with jurisdiction in that particular courthouse to be armed.

I wonder if CH 5 looked next door at the SAO building when they did their story. Let them walk thru the "Security" and see what DOESN'T happen (Unless fixed very recently, it has been the same for 2 years.

Also, until the new North County Courthouse addition opened awhile back, we were allowed to carry in that location. Now we have to secure them like downtown.

Chief Judge's Responsibilities
Pursuant to Florida Rule of Judicial Administration 2.050 (b), the duties of the Chief Judge are administrative in nature. The Chief Judge is responsible for assigning judges to various courts and divisions, regulating the use of courtrooms, overseeing the court dockets, reviewing the status of inmates at the County Jail, and generally providing the leadership necessary for the efficient and proper administration of the Circuit. The Chief Judge is elected by the County Court and Circuit Court Judges of Palm Beach County.

Since we have elections and re-elections of judges, we should have the PBA interview the judges and ask if they would support a chief judge who disallows us to carry. If they do, we work against them for re-election. Those who support us, we support them. We have a strong standing and many people in this county follow our lead, so lets try this. Let a candidate see a couple of hunderd cops at the PBA hall ready to support them or not.
