How did you not know she was home? How did you not hear the gun shot? How did you let a reporter walk up to the house? Come on! Was wooley running this investigation?

Nope, the Sheriff released to x17's name to the media. Against the advise of many. Once the name was released the media went looking.

Fellow Law Enforcement Officers in Sarasota..Here is the real deal..A Surveillance was being conducted on the perps closed up home pending an arrest/search warrant by your CIB.The immediate surveillance of the home was being conducted by undercover officers of your fine agency. The entrance/exits to the subdivision were covered by MSO units pending an entry by our SWAT Team.It was belived the perp was in the home based on pinging results on the cell phone and the tower being used.
As you well know an "editor" of the Hearld Tribune took it upon himself to enter the neighborhood to conduct neighbor interviews and then while in the neighborhood took it upon himself to go the the "Murder" suspects home to "interview"her.Knocking on the front door he looked thru window and saw the suspect suppine on a chair on the lani.Did he stop there and call 911? No he called out to a recently interviewed neighbor to come with him to the rear lani area to check on the deceased. It this point CIB from your agency as well as MSO personel made a tatical approach to the home not knowing who Mr Editor was, finding the perp deceased.
Bottom line the Editor instead of reporting the news was making the news and in doing so put his life, the life of citizens and last but not least the lives of our fellow law enforcement officers in harms way.
As always it is a pleasure working with you and Kudos to all the personel involved in this joint effort

    • When law enforcements waits for a search warrant and an arrest warrant, it makes it legal. It also gives officers the legal right to search the home, even if the suspect says we can't. Unfortunately, our hands are tied by the constitution of the United States -- and that's why officers can't simply go barging into homes. Sometimes we have to wait!!!!
      [/*:m:2n6ey1s7]
    • When officers conduct covert survelleince, then we can't allow our presence to be known -- which means if a newspaper editor decides to knock on doors in the suspect's neighborhood, then there isn't anything that we can legally do to stop him. If the newspaper editor decides to knock on the suspect's door, then we can't stop that either -- even though he's ruining the "legal" investigation -- all we can do is blow our cover and go ahead and make x25 with the suspect's home. We're forced to at that point. Naturally, all of this is hypothetical and just an example. [/*:m:2n6ey1s7]
All of this demonstrates how aggressive the media can be to "get the big story" so the individual reporter can get a pat on the back from his supervisor. Unfortunately, there have been cases where aggressive newspaper reporters have ruined long-term logistical investigations, simply because they want "the big story."

The advent of the electronic media (satellite, internet, Nextels, etc...) means that the media can instantaniously get information about suspects and victims. Editor X can order Reporter Y to go to the FDLE office to run a criminal history (per the Sunshine Law) and then he can order Reporter Z to go to the DHSMV office to run a DL check and to get a DL photo and then ***POOF*** they have tons of information, which they then can release to the public "for the big story," thus jeapordizing the integrity of a criminal investigation.

Oh well... welcome to the 21st Century.

    He was lucky

Yeah I see your point and so be it. Oh well thats life but dont we have an obligation to act when this idiot puts his life in harms way knocking on a murder suspects door whom we think is there and alledgedly just killed someone with a firearm at that? I agree with the covert surveillance but this guy is a TRUE IDIOT.
