FBI: Murders Up In Most S. Florida Major Cities
2006 Crime Statistics Saw Decreases In Hialeah, Pembroke Pines
Overall Violent Crimes Saw Little Increase
More people were killed in Broward County's major cities in 2006 than were in 2005, while the murder rate for Miami-Dade's major cities was up by an even greater number, according to the annual FBI national crime statistics for major cities nationwide. Violent crimes overall were down, except in 4 of Broward's major cities.
The number of murders in Broward County's six largest cities increased 37 percent last year on the average, but overall crime figures were close to 2005's, or in some cases, slightly down
Some cities saw significant statistical increases. Murder was up 200% in Coral Springs, which saw 2 murders in 2006 compares to none in 2005. Pompano Beach saw a 100% increase, as did Miramar. Pembroke Pines was the only city to post a decrease in the number of murders, with an 83% drop year to year.
In Miami-Dade county, the city of Miami saw a 43% increase in homicides, while Miami Gardens was up 64%. Of the three cities over 100,000 population in Miami-Dade county, only Hialeah saw fewer murders year to year, with a decrease of 38%.
The results in South Florida followed a nationwide trend that showed violent crime was up slightly in 2006, while thefts and other nonviolent offenses like larceny and arson dropped.
Broward cities reported 48 murders in 2006, compared with 35 in 2005. Miami Dade cities on the list reported 86 murders in 2006, compared to 75 in 2005.
Most of the South Florida cities saw at least slight decrease in violent crimes overall, with the exceptions of Coral Springs, Ft. Lauderdale, Miramar, and Pembroke Pines. Violent crime in Coral Springs was up 30%, while Miramar saw a 14% increase. Overall violent crimes in Miami-Dade cities was down between 2 and 6 percent.
The annual report tracked only cities with populations over 100,000, meaning just six cities in Broward and three in Miami-Dade county made the list, and figures for unincorporated jurisdictions like BSO and Miami-Dade Police were not included.

C'mon . . . Come On!!!!! Surely you know better. Clearly those that cannot handle their own GLOCKS will not be chosen to demonstrate proficiency and authorized to carry anything else. The question was whether the HK UMP45 is viable alternative to the AR15. For urban engagements, the slow moving (900 FPS), low penetration and heavy impact .45 caliber may be a more suitable option.
