New digs replacing leaky one

DELTONA -- A leaky roof, inadequate heating and air conditioning and allergy-inducing dust are among the problems driving the Volusia County Sheriff's Office from its substation on Providence Boulevard to temporary digs on Deltona Boulevard.

The city's planned public safety complex will eventually solve space shortages and maintenance problems for Deltona-based deputies and firefighters. But plans for that project -- including a location -- are not yet finalized, and the city is working on $9 million in bond financing for the complex, officials said.

Commissioner David Santiago said he has heard complaints from deputies and added the city, which contracts law enforcement services from the Sheriff's Office, has not taken steps needed to make the public safety complex happen.
