EX-FHP MAJOR applied for appointment to Sheriff

Ex- Major and highest ranking female, who has a Masters degree applied for appointment. We all can support her she has a bigger plan to stop the good ole boy system, which would allow room for diversity in our workplace instead of if your friends with the SHERIFF you get permoted to Major in the corrections. Its time for our department to change after 22-23 years that means new blood new ideas that would allow a fair promotion and equal process for all. The real question is we make the difference by writting the Governors office and express our dislikes for the corruption at the SHERIFFS OFFICE.

Hey Petey, a lot of people agree with you, the Bradenton Herald is getting feedback on the same topic:

Tharpe sttd she’s a friend of Steube so I wouldn’t want her either. Pearson said he’d make immediate changes at MSO –“Each person and the assignment they hold would have to be evaluated to determine their effectiveness and organizational placement.” Sounds good to me!

    FHP fires local troop commander

    June 15, 2006

SARASOTA -- The Florida Highway Patrol fired the region's top commander and highest-ranking woman Tuesday in the midst of an internal investigation into a crash-prone trooper who was allowed to patrol Sarasota County.

Maj. Rebecca Tharpe, who oversees a 10-county area that includes Manatee, Sarasota and Charlotte counties, was fired Tuesday after 26 years at the agency.

In an internal memo recommending the termination, FHP Director Col. Christopher Knight called it "something that should have been done long ago" and said Tharpe had a "pattern of weak leadership and insubordination."

Knight also cited Tharpe's performance prior to 2001, when she was transferred to Troop F in Bradenton "due to her management failures" as commander of Troop E in Miami.

Knight's memo also said there is "little doubt" Tharpe will file a lawsuit or gender discrimination claim. The memo criticizes Tharpe for recruiting female FHP members to join with her in some form of lawsuit or equal employment opportunity claim against the agency.

Tharpe's attorney, Ryan Barack, said her termination is illegal and discriminatory. Barack also called the memo "bizarre" -- full of vagaries that cloak the real reason Tharpe was fired.

"I have never seen anything like it before," Barack said. "It admits it is firing her in retaliation for her voicing concerns about sex discrimination."

FHP spokesman Ernie Duarte said the decision to fire Tharpe was based on the totality of the circumstances outlined in the six-page memo.

Knight wrote that Tharpe has "a pattern of taking action against the department when she does not receive promotions or positions that she believes are her inherent rights because of her gender."

Court records show Tharpe filed a gender discrimination lawsuit in 2003 against the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. The suit, which wasn't available Wednesday, was settled in March.

Knight also wrote there would be "possible negative and attacking media articles (specifically against me)."

Tharpe was investigated in connection with a trooper under her command who continued patrolling after six squad car crashes in her first year.

Trooper Tiffany Ferrell was removed from road patrol in Sarasota County only after the Herald-Tribune asked for public records on her crashes. The four crashes she caused in her year of patrol could have led to a three-month suspension of her driver's license if she hadn't been a trooper.

The resulting internal FHP investigation led to the demotion of a Venice District captain for a "supervisory breakdown" and pulling Ferrell from the road.

Tharpe's response to that investigation was one of six "management failures" that Knight cited in his recommendation to David Westberry, deputy executive director of the state Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Westberry signed Tharpe's termination letter.

Knight said Tharpe blamed other department members and failed to take any responsibility for the Ferrell issue. She also failed to act on a year-old request to realign her troop, and has strained relationships with the troopers she commands.

When she took firearms and vehicles from five troopers who failed their firearms requalification tests, she did not do it in a "private setting in a respectful manner," Knight wrote.

Knight cited a November 2004 complaint from one of the captains in the troop about how hard Tharpe was to work with. Knight also said she had her patrol car windows tinted, "a direct violation of FHP Policy."

Barack, Tharpe's attorney, said she is "exploring all of her legal options."

Tharpe's achievements are because of her hard work and her commitment to safety for the people of Florida, he said. "To suggest otherwise is an insult to Maj. Tharpe, and women in law enforcement."

Why would anyone go from a childish department like FHP to another department with immature people like this person?

We are so happy Wells is finally stepped down. After the recent Cleopatra scandal that was just the icing on the cake for his corrupt group.Wells demoted one of his Captains( a close friend who left Wells and became Police Chief for another department) back in 1989-90 because he refused to lie, falsify documents in order to reprimand and fire a deputy he (Wells) did not like who had violated no policy.

Question to ponder for the citizens of this county. Why is it during the whole Delta scandal during Well's term, Why was Deputy Charles Britt (the one officer who spoke up about the corruption he witnessed, did not change his story and did not purge himself in federal court like others Carpenter, Wooten) He was called in by Steube and the only one given a polygraph test??? Not the ones accused and eventually convicted of the crimes, but the "whistle Blower" black listed and shunned till the eventually forced him to resign? He should have been given a medal by Mnatee county for exsposing the corruption Well's and Steube did so much to cover up

If that's true then why is the whole Wells clan trashing her? Do you think they are happy about her applying??? Get real.
