    Sheriff Wells to step down
    MANATEE -- Sheriff Charlie Wells is stepping down today. The surprise announcement is expected to come at a meeting later this morning, when Wells will announce a restructuring of the Sheriff's Office that will lead to his retirement and the ascension of Col. Brad Steube to interim sheriff.

    Wells will officially leave office during the first week of April. Wells has submitted his resignation letter to Gov. Charlie Crist, who will name a replacement. Wells and others have privately lobbied for Steube to take over, and sources within the Sheriff's Office say that Crist is likely to pick Steube as the successor.
