    Miami Gardens

Anybody not tied down to this area or place should really look at the Miami Gardens Police Department website. The department is being created from the ground up and they are offering a $12,000 signing bonus and a $7,000 relocation stipend, a lateral transfer of vacation, sick time and they are giving you up to 13 years of transferable service. Another words. if you have 5 years here you will go right into a step that is equal to five years of service there.

Look it up, a 15 year veteran gets a base pay of 78,000 and should easily hit a 100,000 with holiday and differential. They are under the Florida Retirement System and you don't pay the 8% into your pension like we do.

If you are a 20 year veteran, you still only get the 13 year rate but you only have to do 6 years there to retire under the state system and get a $400 a month stipend forever for health insurance because they add your 20 years onto the six you need to do to qualify.

You don't need to send recruiters to New York or wherever we are going to attract new personnel when you offer benefits like that.

I'm not trying to stir up problems with this post but am merely trying to educate and inform our members of the opportunity being offered which may benefit their financial future because we are all going to leave here eventually.

I only have eight years on and it would be crazy for me to go. But if I had 20, over 10 or under 5, I would be seriously considering going for the way better benefits.

Maybe the City could learn something and apply some of these same benefits to keep us.

HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAAAAAHHAHAHAHHA HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAH AHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAAHAHHA cough cough cough HAHAHAhahahhahahhahahah

    From the Miami Gardens Website

    City Profile

The City of Miami Gardens was incorporated on May 13, 2003, as the 33rd city in Miami-Dade County. At a population of 105,457, it is the third largest city in Miami-Dade County (after Miami and Hialeah). The City is located in North-Central region of the county, mid-way between Fort Lauderdale and Miami, and is easily accessed by I-95, the Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) and the Florida Turnpike. The city comprises approximately 20 square miles.

    Community Profile

Miami Gardens is a solid, working and middle class community of unique diversity. It is the largest predominantly African-American municipality in the State of Florida and boasts many Caribbean residents.

    Population: 105,414 (2004 estimate)
    African-American: 79%
    Hispanic: 16%
    Anglo: 4%
Note: Multiple categories preclude 100% total.
    Households: 29,262

*There is a reason there are those incentives to get officers to this department. NO THANK YOU!!!*
Sometimes there is a pay off for the almighty dollar. Each city/county has it's problems, but our Clearwater really is a beautiful place to work and/or live.

    wow

I was looking around the Miami Gardens site and found this:

    http://www.miamigardens-fl.gov/Council/Council.aspx

    http://www.miamigardens-fl.gov/Attorney/Attorney.aspx

    http://www.miamigardens-fl.gov/Clerk/Clerk.aspx

    http://www.miamigardens-fl.gov/Manager/Manager.aspx

For those who don't want to click. The mayor and all 6 city council members are African American. The city attorney is also African American and the city clerk is African American.

The only white dude is the City Manager.

I'm just pointing this out because I've never seen this. Honest. Maybe I don't much about various city governments all over the US, but I've never seen one run entirely by a minority. (minus the city manager) I looked up LA and also Miami, both have a mix of white, black and Hispanic.

    Crime

Just to be clear though, you can live anywhere in a three county area with a take home car so your family doesn't have to live in the city. You just can't be adverse to working in a crime riddled area.

    Re: wow

79% is hardly the minority. Started in 03? what's the growth there since 03? Bet it implodes by 08.

If you guys could recommend any good places to eat, and places to avoid i would really appreciate it. Ill be up there memorial day weekend.

Bythe way, we are also recruiting, its never boring here. Miami Gardens will not be all that its cracked up to be, just give it some time. As i see it they do not have the tax base to support the salaries. If you guys really want to check out another start-up city. Look at the city of Doral, they will have a great tax base and alot of big time businesses in their area.

    Good luck and be safe.
