2 Chattanooga, TN Officers Shot, 1 Killed

The officer who was shot and killed Saturday has been identified as Sgt. James Timothy Chapin.

Chattanooga Police Chief Bobby Dodd tells Newschannel 9 that Chapin had almost 27 years experience with the CPD. He was also a father of two.

Chapin's death marks the first police killing in Chattanooga since 2002, when 26 year old officer Julie Jacks was shot with her own weapon.

The death occured during a Saturday morning shootout at a Brainerd Road business. The CPD says a second officer suffered minor wounds and the suspect was also shot. He is under guard at Erlanger Medical Center.

The exchange of gunfire occured around 10:30 a.m. when police were called to a robbery in progress at U.S. Money Shop at 5952 Brainerd Road. That's next door to the Big Lots.

"Immediately when officers arrived, they encountered one male suspect who began firing at police. A gun battle and foot pursuit ensued...", according to a preliminary release issued by CPD spokesperson Jerri Weary. Police say at least six people were involved in the shootout.

Police immediately shut down Brainerd Road and many of the businesses in the area were closed. Brainerd Road has since been reopened.

The wounded officer is Lorin Johnston. He has been treated and released from the hospital. Newschannel 9 has spoken to his ex-wife, Laura Johnston Bishop: "Though we are divorced, he's the father of my children. We have two wonderful boys. He's a kind and gentle soul and he risked his life to save his partner. But was unable to do so and this will haunt him or the rest of his life."

Newschannel 9 has learned the suspect may be from Colorado. Police have provided no other information about the man.

The website for U.S. Money shops says it offers services such as title loans, title pawns, traditional pawn, gold purchases, check cashing, etc. There are two other U.S. Money Shops in Chattanooga and 25 in South Carolina.
