A 24-year-old police recruit in Prince George's County, Md., has been charged with felony theft.

Authorities said Gary Vanlee Nesbitt of Laurel, Md., was enrolled in the academy class that began July 10.

Officials said they were made aware of an incident involving missing funds from a Giant Food store and Dunbar Armored Car Security.

Officials said Nesbitt was arrested July 25 following an investigation by the police department's internal affairs branch.

Police Chief Melvin High said, "I am deeply disappointed but I'm happy to say that circumstances such as these are not indicative of the quality of our recruits."

The department has placed Nesbitt on administrative until the conclusion of the internal affairs case.
