Lt. Col. Rick Gregory, the deputy director of the Florida Highway Patrol, was nominated today to be the new chief of the New Castle County Police Department.
New Castle County Executive Chris Coons made the announcement during a brief press conference. Gregory spent six years as a firefighter before becoming a Florida state trooper in 1984.
Gregory’s appointment as the county’s police chief must be approved by the County Council. The council is scheduled to meet Sept. 12 to consider the matter, Coons said.
The appointment did not sit especially well with all other police executives in Delaware.
Newport Police Chief Michael Capriglione, for example, said he was “disappointed” that acting New Castle County Chief Scott McLaren did not get the job. McLaren has filled in as chief for the past 13 months and was a candidate for the position.
