'Houston, we have a problem'

Was sounded on April 13, 1970, on Apollo 13. It was again sounded at TIAPD on August 16, 2006, as several officers turn in there resignation notices, or as some have been investigated by several agencies during the past month seeking employment elsewhere. And the management has yet to say anything to any of these officers who seek employment with other agencies.

Until pace is kept with surrounding departments this will keep happening. A horrible radio system for the 3rd time, computers that lose reports or just plain don't work. No take home vehicle, bad pay, and virtually no room for advancement = bad morale.

That compounded with the fact its still run on the good ol boy system, "he who first snitches to chief = winner!". Romor's run rampant even with the Lt's who can't stop gossiping about officers.

Its sad, and until they relieze there is a problem it will never change.

i have been a leo for approx 13 or so years and have thought about going to the tiapd. It seems to be a great place for a second career. How bad can it really be? Do u guys get no support from admin? how hard would it be to get moral up? are take home cars something to look forward to in the near future or is it a dead issue?

Everything you just mentioned is a dead issue. There will never be take home cars, the authority has already said " if you want a take home car, go somewhere else to work". Remember that everything we do at the airport is just for SHOW to keep the media and traveling public happy.

This would probably be a good second career for most who don't really want to be a "real" cop but are looking for a good place to make some low stress coin. However, just make sure you know what you are getting. What I mean by this is, this tends to be a good place for people just out of the millitary with no prior LE experience. If you can follow orders, no matter what they are, then you would do very well here. If you don't have a problem with being mirco managed, being told to ride a bus to work, count cars hourly, ask a seventy year old lady who just fell down for her ID so you can run her for warrants (I could go on and on), then this might be the place for you. In Law Enforcement the catch phrase is "TO PROTECT AND SERVE". At TIAPD it is, "TO PROTECT AND SERVE" followed by "the Aviation Authority from any civil liability". See for youself and check out the monthly stats. A VAST majority of the calls the officers handle at this department are medical reports (slip and fall, tummy ache, ect.) , lost and found, and people (airport/airline employees) who set off door alarms (on which a subsequent "shame on you" is issued along with a stern finger shake). Very few of the supervisors have ever worked on "the street". They tend to have great business skills, but zero cop sense. The job can be mind numbing and often degrading to someone who has been "out there" and can think for themselves. However, it is low stress, with good conditions and decent pay. You are almost never in court, off on time and not dealing with the day to day street drama. Best of luck!!!
