Curious about who likes what shifts

A study was done a long time ago that measured the effects of different work schedules on employees. It was the long term results of this study that influenced the decision of most employers to have an 8 hour shift. I believe it took place sometime during the industrial revolution but Im not sure.
It has been found that a lot of errors were made at the end of the 12 hour shift.
