Belle Glade

Former police sergeant
faces perjury indictment

A grand jury last week indicted former Police Sgt. Jeffers Walker on two counts of perjury and one count of making a false statement in writing, according to Mike Edmondson, spokesman for the state attorney's office for Palm Beach County.

The charges stem from a prior grand jury investigation that concluded Walker and former Belle Glade Police Chief Albert Dowdell botched an arrest of a nightclub-shooting suspect.

Walker is charged with lying during an official proceeding on April 24, a third-degree felony, punishable up to five years in prison, Edmondson said. He's also charged with lying during nonofficial proceedings in January and making false official statements in writing last November. He was arrested Saturday and was released on a $5,000 bond the same day.
