Taser stun guns accomplish what's needed

In reference to Reggie Dogan's column ("Taser stun guns aren't water pistols for officers to shoot at will," May 9) in the Local section: How interesting about the latest wave of controversy about law enforcement officers and tasers.

Did you know that there are 7,000 agencies using tasers? The Escambia County Sheriff's Office has approximately 200 in use. Most agencies require that an officer be tased before being issued this less-lethal device.

While I recognize that several deaths have been reported, it is interesting to note that out of the thousands of police officers who have been voluntarily tased, not one has died.

Perhaps they know not to consume large amounts of illegal substances prior to the test.

Also worth mentioning is that when the device worked its magic, no officer I know of asked for a repeat application.

Perhaps if you are being assaulted or robbed, Mr. Dogan could provide the Escambia County Sheriff's Office a class in writing effective reprimands or verbal counseling forms to warn violent offenders that we mean business before taking physical action.
