View Full Version : Federal Agents are Welcome at Tampa Police FOP Lodge 27

05-09-2006, 05:13 PM
Although the name is Tampa Police Lodge 27 of the Fraternal Order of Police, federal agents in Tampa are welcome at the FOP. As many of you who have served in DC know, the lodge there is comprised of police from dozens of federal and local agencies. You need not be a member of Tampa PD to belong to Lodge 27.

Members of Lodge 27 enjoy a free steak dinner on the monthly meeting nights. The meetings are also an opportunity to meet and socialize with both active duty and retired local police.

The announcement below relates to a new activity at the Lodge which is intended to encourage attendance at the meetings and to attract new members. Note that this game has been determined to be legal since no player puts up any money.

The Lodge is located on the east side of Florida Avenue just south of Sligh Avenue; parking in the rear.

From the TPD message board:

To all FOP members and potential members,

Tampa FOP Lodge #27 is sponsoring a FREE Texas Hold’em tournament twice a month (one per cycle so everyone can have a fair chance to play). It costs nothing to play, everyone starts with a set amount of chips and the top three players receive prizes for their efforts (the first tournament, the prizes were $10 gift certificates to Chili’s). Refreshments will be served (not literally, but they will be available for all). Everyone that plays earns participation points and each tournament, the top three finishers receive extra points. The tournaments will run every month this year with the top eight point winners having a December playoff to determine the best (bigger prizes awarded for the top three finishers in the December tournament). You need not be a FOP member to play, however, after three tournaments you must apply for membership to be eligible to continue. Each month, one of the two tournaments for that month will be held on our general membership meeting night so that perspective members can have a steak on us prior to the tournament (only one steak dinner prior to joining…sorry, lodge rules). Immediately following dinner (served from 1730 to 1830) the lodge meeting will be held (usually lasts 45 minutes to an hour), then the tournament begins (at roughly 1930 hours). For those who would like to play, but don’t understand the rules, the first twenty minutes of the tournament will be instructional. After that, the blinds raise and the play gets more serious. Since it’s FREE, what have you got to lose? Come join in the fun and fellowship while earning bragging rights over your peers if you win!

Who do I contact if I want to attend a meeting?

You don't have to make arrangements in advance. Just show up around 5:30 to 6PM for a free steak dinner. It's better to get there around 5:30 to allow plenty of time to meet a few people and socialize.

The meeting starts at 6:30PM. You will be asked to wait in the Lounge during the actual meeting unless you are already a member of the FOP somewhere.

Then after the meeting, which only takes about 30 minutes, there is more time to socialize, and during the next few weeks there is also the card game after the meeting.

When you arrive you might want to ask to meet Gene Kelly who is in charge of promoting membership. He will give you a warm welcome.
